Paul Geissler, painter, printmaker, and illustrator, was born on 25 June 1881 in Erfurt, Germany. He studied drawing with the painter Hermann Sondermann and attended the Arts and Crafts School in Erfurt for four years. Geissler eventually gave up painting and specialized in etching, traveling all over Europe in the 1910’s. His greatest output of etchings was in the 1920’s and his work is represented in museums all over the world. Geissler died in 1965 just short of his 84th birthday.
This image is of the Musketeer Fountain in Bern, Switzerland. It has been expertly hand colored and is titled (in German) and signed by Geissler himself. The etching has been double matted to 16 x 20 inches - the visual size of the image s approximately 10.5 x 13.25 inches. It is in very good condition for its age with just some light rippling on the left side (hidden when in the mat and some small brown ‘foxing’ spots here and there (see photos).
