This original, book plate stipple engraving, Blue Phlox, was made by the French artist, Pierre-Joseph Redoute. and is from Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs, (The Most Beautiful Flowers), printed in 1827.
The works of the great botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759-1840) occupy a central position in the development of European botanical art. He has been described as the "Rembrandt" and "Raphael" of flowers. Born into a family of artists, Redoute working for patrons such as, Marie Antoinette to Empress Josephine. The Choix des Plus Belles Fleurs is one of Redoute's last, and most personal work. This piece was bought from an estate sale in France. It, and another fifteen pieces are in varying condition, this one being in very good condition . 12 1/2" x 9 1/2". Both front and back photos show the copper plate impression.
