For auction is a vintage 1949 Boston Herald Spelling Bee Class Champion medal. It was made by the L.G. Balfour Co. of Attleboro, Mass. The medal has a great art deco design with the Winged Victory of Samothrace (a.k.a the Nike of Samothrace) over a running newspaper boy. Flanking the winged victory it reads Boston Herald in vertical script. Around the newsboy it reads The Boston Herald, The Traveler, Sunday Herald. Underneath is a curved banner with Spelling Bee, 1949. The back of the medal says Class Champion and is signed Balfour. The medal is suspended from a red, white , and blue striped ribbon and has a brass pin clasp. The overall length is about 3.25" long. The medal is about 1.75" long x 1.125" wide.
It's in great shape. Good patina on the medal. Minor storage and handling wear with a few scratches. Ribbon is clean. The pictures are the best indicator.
