It is typically found with a curved banded pattern with some to many colors. The bands are typically curved but parallel to one another. Onyx translates from Greek to mean fingernail. Onyx is believed to help increase strength and self-control. Throughout history, it has been thought to help with sorrow, worry, and nervousness.
