AS IS Onitsuka Tiger is a Japanese sportswear brand founded in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka. Founded in Kobe as Onitsuka Shōkai company, Onitsuka later changed the name to Asics, making Onitsuka Tiger a subsidiary of the Asics Corporation. Onitsuka Tiger is most known for the Mexico 66, one of the pioneering running shoes that inspired the creation of Blue Ribbon Sports, Nike's predecessor. Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman was the US distributor for the popular shoe and also helped design its follow-up, the Onitsuka Corsair, which eventually became the Nike Cortez. The Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 was introduced for the Olympic Games of Mexico in 1968 and gained global popularity outside of athletics thanks to Bruce Lee, who wore the shoes in his 1972 film, Game of Death.
