In 1946 & 1948, British director David Lean adapted two of Charles Dickens’ novels into two of the best movies ever made, “Great Expectations” and “Oliver Twist”. “Oliver Twist” was not released in the United States until 1951 because of the controversy about Alec Guinness’ portrayal of Fagin.
This is a 1951 8x10 inch lobby card photo used by movie theaters to promote the film. It shows Oliver at the orphanage just before he is forced by the other boys to ask for more to eat. Blond child actor John Howard Davies went on to become a major producer/director in British television (Benny Hill, Fawlty Towers, Monty Python). The photo is in good condition for its age with a few tiny spots and two creased corners (see photos).
