Condition: Vintage / Antique / Used, Original Condition Unaltered, Some Imperfections
Very good vintage condition with age appropriate wear and signs of use. There is a fair amount of oxidation, de-silvering on smaller mirrors. Crackling paint and cracked glass on some panels.
Description: This exquisitely handcrafted verre églomisé wall mirror is a bit of a mystery. Its origin might be Europe (possibly Spain, Portugal or Italy), or perhaps it is a European-influenced South or Central American creation. This mirror appears fairly old. I'm guessing mid-20th century.
Verre Églomisé is a French term meaning "gilded glass" and refers to the process of applying both a design and gilding onto the rear face of glass to produce a mirror finish.
This particular wall mirror has a wood base and the adjoined églomisé panels have been hand-painted with stylized neoclassical motifs that include scrolling foliate forms and both natural and supernatural fauna, such as doves and gryphons. The smaller scalloped mirrors and painted eglomisé panels show their age with a fair amount of cracks, oxidation, de-silvering, and crackling paint. These
"imperfections" do not detract from the mirror's overall look and tend to enhance its vintage character.
