If you like this skirt and aren’t familiar with the iconic fashion designer, Chessa Davis, maybe you should be.
Chessa Davis, (née Gloria Castillo), was born on March 3, 1933, in Albuquerque, New Mexico and began her career as an actress at a young age. By her mid-thirties, she had appeared in hundreds of television, film and stage productions. Accepting an invitation to a party, Ms. Davis made her appearance wearing a skirt she had designed and sewn for the occasion. Made from fabric pieces sewn together in a patchwork pattern, the skirt was an immediate hit, and another invitee, who happened to own a Beverly Hills boutique, approached
the actress and requested an order of six skirts.
That led to a garage workshop beginning and the creation of the peddler style skirts made from pieces of fabric and often embellished with trinkets or baubles. As these skirts caught on, they were donned by the wealthy who made a game out of outdoing one another by the quantity and eccentricities of their embellishments.
