From the Spring/Summer 2017 runway in NYC, by Japanese American designer Hanako Maeda, for her brand ADEAM. This is a cropped, flowy, cotton-blend sweater with cutouts and ties at both shoulders. In tan. The sleeves are elbow-length and wide, kimono-style. The fabric is luscious and the construction marvelous -- truly a work of art.
For this runway collection, Maeda says she was inspired by the Japanese art of calligraphy. The style expresses composure, ease, and a relaxed state of mind. The fluid movement of the artist’s hand informed the draping fluidity of her garments, while the natural loops in calligraphy could be seen in the knots. She also wanted to capture the effortlessness of traditional summer dressing in her native culture, where kimonos are worn differently in warm weather. The lighter, looser styles, called yukatas, are tied gently at the waist with a thin obi belt. Maeda referenced this in her cropped airy tops, exposed shoulders, and oversized bows.
The looks in this collection are made for layering. Everything is easy, gentle, and versatile. On the runway, Maeda showed this sweater layered over an oversized white shirt. It also can worn on its own.
