The album was recorded at Escape Studios, Kent, with additional recording and mixing at AIR Studios, London. It is the group's best-known and most successful release. The album title is often considered to be a shortened form of the phrase describing a folk hangover cure, "the hair of the dog that bit you". The album peaked at #17 on the US Billboard 200. The lead single 'Love Hurts' is a power ballad version of the 1960 Everly Brothers hit. Nazareth's version reached #8 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The second single and title track 'Hair of the Dog' peaked at #44 and the two songs remain the group's most successful and popular.
