Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral composed of silicon carbide (SiC) that's often used as an alternative to diamonds in jewelry.  • Moissanite was first discovered in minute quantities within a meteorite crater in Arizona in 1893 by Henri Moissan, a French scientist. • While naturally occurring, it's extremely rare to find it in sizes large enough for jewelry. • Today, the vast majority of moissanite used in jewelry is created in laboratories.  • Brilliance and Fire: Moissanite exhibits exceptional brilliance and fire, often described as a "rainbow sparkle," which can even exceed that of a diamond. • Hardness: It's the second-hardest gemstone used in jewelry, scoring 9.25 on the Mohs scale, just below diamonds (10).
