I believe the company paints these things because the bottom is clear - there are a couple of scuffs on toward the bottom - I tried to take photos but the reflection makes it hard to photograph - it blends in pretty well and I had that part faced toward the back. It is actually a stunning looking piece of décor on a shelf or tabletop. You could use as a planter but there is no hole for drainage so it would have to be a fake plant. Looks nice without anything in it, as well.
