Mini Pewter Cup with Handle, SMR Italy, Vintage

I'm not sure what this is used for, but it's cute. This small pewter pot with a handle is marked SMR Italy. The bowl is approx. 2 1/2 inches in diameter; the handle is approx. 1 inch. It weighs about 2 oz. and is in very good condition. An indent at the rim suggests it may have had a lid. I've collected several opinions regarding the purpose of this item. Is it a candle holder, a stash pot, or a Turkish coffee cup? I think it would make a nice toy kitchen pan for an American Girl doll.
