Midnight Mews

My heart is shattered. I wonder from room to room looking for something. Maybe something to do, to clean, read, something, anything. My sadness consumes me. Midnight was the best damn cat! My 8 year old son met a barn cat at a friend’s that had never been held or touch my a human. And somehow an instant bond was formed. This black cat followed him around the farm all weekend. Then a few days later our friend called to say the cat has sat on our friend’s porch waiting for my son for days. And so we got a cat! A beautiful half crossed eyed purr machine! He never really meowed. He mewed. It’s hard to explain but it’s was adorable and so unique. Everything about him was unique! He never left Jake’s side. He saw my son through T1D diagnosis, middle school, high school, first girlfriends, first breakups, near death illness and went away to college with him. He was Jake’s best friend, kindred spirit and constant companion. Midnight was my buddy, my muse. The patient old friend, always ready to cuddle when you needed it. Even when you didn’t. And he gave hugs! Really hugs! He’d put his arms around your neck the snuggle his face in close and just purr. If you’re reading my teary ramble, give you babies an extra treat, an extra belly rub or 5 more minutes in your lap in honor of Midnight. I’d give anything for 5 more minutes. 04/25/25
