Working vintage 1950 midcentury “Metronome de Maëlzel” made for Sears Roebuck & Co., with a chocolate-mahogany veneer case and clean mechanical action.
A mid-century Metronome de Maëlzel, made expressly for Sears Roebuck & Co. — a solid, working mechanical metronome housed in a 9-inch obelisk-shaped wooden case.
The exterior has a chocolate mahogany veneer (sometimes called a wood overlay) with a natural satin finish and visible grain. The brass tempo scale and pendulum are intact, and it winds smoothly without sticking. When set in motion, it keeps a steady tempo and can be adjusted across the marked scale from Adagio to Presto.
This model has a functional wind-up key and the original paper label on the inner cover with usage instructions. The underside is marked “530-5”, likely the factory batch or model code. Light surface wear is visible at edges and corners — consistent with mid-century age and normal handling — but the finish remains even and presentable.
The pyramid / obelisk form gives it presence whether used or simply displayed on a piano or bookshelf. It works well both as a practical musician’s tool and as a sculptural accent piece for music-room or study décor.
