SNAKE BRACELET
Thracian Treasures from Bulgaria Douvanli (Plovdiv District),
1st half of the 5th century B.C.
This stylized snake with large round eyes is detailed with beading to indicate scales. The original bracelet is from one of three women's burials from mounds dating from the oth to the 1st centuries B.C., excavated near the village of Douvanli in southern Bulgaria. In all three burials wonderful gold ornaments, made in Greek workshops in Thrace, were found together with pectorals of rare forms, necklaces, and massive bracelets impressive for their rich ornamentation.
All attest to the great wealth and luxurious taste of their owners.
The Museum's bracelet is cast in pewter electroplated with 24 karat gold. The model for the reproduction was made from a master mold taken from the original bracelet.
Condition : signs of wear as shown on photos - very minor discoloration on balls of one of the snakes
