Mata Ortiz Mexico Polychrome Pottery Seed Pot / Vase with Hand Painted Snake Design Mata Ortiz pottery is internationally known for its elegant form, precision designs and beautiful colors. The Mata Ortiz pots are formed by only the potter's hands; No pottery wheels are used. Each pot is hand built and painted by the artist and then fired using cottonwood tree bark. This pot is an excellent example of the polychrome style that uses beautiful earth tones like natural tan, charcoal and deep red. The paint in places is faded and shows slight wear. This piece has a surface crack that stretches from the top rim to nearly the middle of the rounded base (please see close-up photos). Price reduced to account for this flaw, and extreme care in packaging will be taken to ensure the surface crack does not spread.
