A striking hand-coiled blackware pottery vase from the celebrated Mata Ortiz tradition of northern Chihuahua, Mexico.
Meticulously etched with a flowing underwater motif of turtles and fish, this piece captures the fluid rhythm of nature through expert sgraffito detailing and a mirror-smooth burnished finish.
Each Mata Ortiz pot is formed without a wheel, polished with stone, and pit-fired to achieve the deep metallic sheen that defines the region’s artistry. This example’s rounded olla form and contrast between smoky black and warm clay tones reflect the Quezada family influence that reshaped modern Mexican pottery in the late 20th century.
