Super rare! Modernist Demitasse Set of Five Espresso Cups and Saucers. Designed by the legendary Lagardo Tackett for Schmid Porcelain. Made in Japan, 1959.
The 10-piece set includes 5 handled mugs and 5 matching saucers in a gorgeous sky blue. White inside.
SIZE: Each mug measures 2 1/4” tall by 1 1/4” diameter (2” wide, incl handle). Each plate measures 2 1/4” diameter.
CONDITION: Though shiny and bright, the set does show some signs of age and use, including very minor fading and finish wear. Clean inside and out. I have also featured photos that show a few tiny darker blue dots, which were part of the manufacturer process. The close up shows the one with a few tiny dots; three others have even subtler single dots.
LARGARDO TACKETT: Anyone familiar with the “Case Study Houses” project from Arts & Architecture magazine organized by John Entenza from 1945 to 1966 has seen the work of LaGardo Tackett (1911 - 1984) displayed on most of the featured homes’ patios. His oversized pots, simply known as “Architectural Pottery,” stood as planters and totems at the edges of pools, in courtyards, and in the arid gardens of California. Ceramics collectors can usually identify Tackett’s minimalist white porcelain tableware, but his creations include scores of other forms and several signature colors. His interests were not limited to pottery but evolved over his lifetime from furniture design to a philosophical approach to a modern style of living.
