I usually wear an M in shirts but buy L for winter coats to fit layers underneath. Would that be appropriate for this coat as well?

@jadefortiner Yes, absolutely. You could wear a sweater or turtleneck underneath it. Just not anything extremely chunky or with huge sleeves.
