Lot of 3 Vintage Brothers Of The Brush Pinbacks from 1965 Smithtown Long Island
Set of three vintage Smithtown 1965 buttons with blue and white design. Reads Tercentenary 1665-1965 Smithtown, Long Island New York - Brother Of the Brush. These are in very good vintage condition. Fun little piece of history.
Brother of the Brush: was an organization formed during the 1965 Smithtown Tercentenary, a celebration of the town's 300th anniversary. The organization required all men in Smithtown to grow beards for the duration of the tercentenary celebration, ending on August 14th, 1965. The term "Brother of the Brush" and the act of growing beards for a centennial celebration were also seen in other events, such as the 1963 Gettysburg Centennial, where it commemorated the Battle of Gettysburg. The button features a cartoon character with a prominent mustache and beard, riding on a stylized animal, and is a collectible piece of memorabilia from the event.
