Introduction:
Canyon Cloth was a trademarked fabric developed and promoted by London Fog (formerly the Londontown Clothing Company) beginning in the 1950s–1960s.
What it is:
A cotton-polyester blend fabric, engineered to look and feel like all-cotton but with enhanced water resistance, durability, and wrinkle resistance.
It was lightweight but tightly woven, giving it both a smooth hand and protective qualities.
Treated with London Fog’s proprietary water-repellent and stain-resistant finishes, making it ideal for trench coats and rainwear.
During the mid-20th century, trench coats were shifting from heavy gabardine or rubberized raincoats to lighter, more practical fabrics.
Canyon Cloth gave London Fog a signature fabric identity, much like Burberry had with its gabardine.
It was marketed as “all-weather comfort”: breathable, stylish, and professional-looking enough for city wear.
Legacy:
By the 1980s–1990s, Canyon Cloth had become synonymous with London Fog coats..
Vintage London Fog coats labeled “Made of Canyon Cloth” are still prized for their durability and mid-century styling.
Common features:
Zip-out quilted liners with faux-fur trim
Faux-fur “dress collars” to make trench coats more fashionable for office wear
Department stores often highlighted these as “convertible coats” — practical for work, travel, and winter wear.
