James Rizzi was born in 1950 in Brooklyn and graduated from the University of Florida, Gainesville in 1974. That year, he began to exhibit his artwork and soon became famous for his colorful, three dimensional Pop Art serigraphs. By the mid-1980s, Rizzi had taken his place among the top American Pop artists like Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, and Keith Haring. His work was also popular in Europe, especially Germany where Rizzi became the first living artist to be asked to design German postage stamps. In 1996, he was named the official artist of the Atlanta Summer Olympics. Sadly, Rizzi died from a heart condition at only 61 years of age in 2011.
This colorful 3-D serigraph was created in 1984 and is called ”Breakin”. It coincided with the break dancing craze in the early 1980s. Each of the artwork’s two layers have been colored by hand so no two examples are alike. Rizzi signed, titled, numbered, and dated the piece in pencil along the bottom edge. The serigraph itself measures 3.5 x 5.5 inches and has been double matted to 12 by 14 inches. The artwork and mats are in excellent condition but the white frame has a few scuffs here and there (see photos).
