Original vintage Life Magazine issued December 1, 1941, a very significant date given that Pearl Harbor was bombed six days later. Pair this issue with the publication of December 8, 1941 (separate listing) and you have a remarkable example of the events and politics of our country (and the world) just prior to the U.S. becoming fully engaged in World War II. Of particular interest is the feature regarding Japan's visit to the White House in November 1941, which didn't produce any positive developments. It raises the question of what the Japanese military and political motives truly were. The condition of this issue reflects some stains and tears but the interior pages are intact. Advertisements include full page color ads for Oldsmobile, Mobilgas, and Camel cigarettes, which all reference the war. Historically and socially, this is another very interesting reflection of the time.
