LEONOR RIVERA WEEKEND JUTE WEEKEND BAG (BENCAB) NWT
THE STORY
Leonor Rivera is considered the first sweetheart of Philippine national patriot Jose P. Rizal. Over eight years, they kept their love alive by writing letters to each other. Because her parents disapproved of their relationship, some letters were intercepted and never reached her. The ill-fated romance ended when Rivera married an Englishman. She died in childbirth in 1893 at the age of 26. BenCab (Benedicto Reyes Cabrera) is an internationally renowned Filipino painter and printmaker. Hailed as a master of contemporary Philippine art, he was conferred the Order of National Artists Award for Visual Arts in 2006. BenCab lives and works in Baguio City in Northern Philippines, where he founded the BenCab Museum. Jute is a vegetable fiber that is part textile and part wood. It is so strong that for centuries jute was used to make gunny sacks to transport grain. Today, this durable fiber is spun into eco-friendly bags.
