It also says "dry clean only," and I'm pretty sure someone washed it in water and it shrunk, because it is nowhere near an XL. It is 19" pit to pit which is generally a size medium. I wear a medium to large depending on brand, and this sweater is a snug fit on me, and slightly cropped in length. So I'd say it fits like a true medium, or like a small if you want it to be oversized. The sweater still looks and feels great, but the fabric is now essentially felted wool.
