Larry Levine was a fashion designer known for his classic and tailored women's outerwear and suits. The brand, which he founded in 1951, became a major name in women's apparel before being acquired by Bluestar Alliance in 2013.
The designer's early life
Founder: Larry Levine (May 10, 1926–February 9, 2008).
Origin: He was born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, to Polish-Jewish immigrants.
Early career: After serving in the US Navy during World War II, Levine became a traveling salesman for the Capri Coat company in the 1940s.
Company history
In 1951, Levine started Larry Levine, Inc., specializing in women's wool coats and later suits. His classic designs gained popularity, leading to his coats and suits being sold in numerous department stores by the mid-1960s. A significant design collaboration with Gerald McCann from the early 1970s through the 1990s led to the creation of additional labels. The brand was considered a leader in women's outerwear during the 1960s through the 1980s. Members of the Levine family were also involved in the business.
Brand today
The Larry Levine brand was acquired by Bluestar Alliance in 2013. Under new ownership, the brand has expanded its offerings beyond outerwear to include a full lifestyle collection. The brand continues to focus on classic American style, emphasizing clean lines, quality fabrics, and a superior fit.
