Labradorite was first identified in the late 1700s in Labrador, Canada, by Moravian missionaries. Indigenous Inuit peoples already knew of the stone and believed the Northern Lights were captured within it. Over time, labradorite became prized for its shifting iridescent colors — a phenomenon later named labradorescence — and it gained popularity in jewelry and decorative arts across Europe and beyond.
