PEWTER
“Pewter is highly regarded in decorative objects and tableware for its lustrous glow. Pewter will not tarnish readily and will hold its luster for a long time if washed periodically and dried thoroughly.
Pewter has a melting point of approximately 450 (F) degrees and should not be exposed to direct flame. Do not permit candles to burn down into holder, or place vessels over flame or burner.
Pewter is one of the world’s first metals and was expertly worked into objects of art by the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Chinese. By 1750 the British began making a finer bright finish pewter called “Britannia Ware” composed almost entirely of tin and containing no added lead.
America came into what was called the “Pewter Century” between 1750 and 1850. This was the time of the great New England pewterers; it was the age of Duncan Phyfe and his furniture and the clock-makers of Connecticut.
This piece of LENOX. Kirk Stieff Collection pewter is the same high quality as the Britannia Ware.”
