Made of wood (cherry, pear, or maple), and consist of a large head and a cylindrical body, symbolizing the wish and the desire to have a healthy child. Decorated with landscapes or characters and annotated with handwritten kanji. Kokeshi were created by kiji-shi (wood craftsmen) in northern Honshū (Japan's largest island) in the Tōhoku region during the late Edo period.
They are offered today, in the Japanese tradition, to declare friendship or love to the person who receives it.
