Added to the International Cloud Atlas as a supplementary feature in March 2017, it is the first cloud formation added since cirrus intortus in 1951. Asperitas clouds, formerly known as Undulatus asperatus, are a newly recognized cloud type characterized by a wavy, turbu-lent, and chaotic appearance at the cloud base. They are de-scribed as looking like a roughened sea surface viewed from below. While not directly linked to heavy precipitation, they are often associated with thunderstorms and atmospheric instability.
