Josef Albers began his formal training in 1908 at Germany's famed design school, the Bauhaus, rising the ranks from student to assistant director. When the Nazis closed the school in 1933, he accepted a teaching position as the first art teacher at a newly founded experimental institution in Asheville, North Carolina: Black Mountain College. A partial list of students included Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Merce Cunningham, John Cage, Cy Twombly, and Buckminster Fuller.
The year 1950 marked a new phase in Albers's career: he began teaching at Yale University and here started his best-known work, the series "Homage to the Square", a seemingly endless exploration of the effects of color through nested squares in various tonal themes and combinations.
This plate is a 1999 MOCA limited edition reproduction on ceramic.
