Japanese Signed Hand Carved Wood Noh Theater Omi-Onna Mask

This mask is handcrafted and carved from natural wood and lacquer. Omi-Onna's (sometimes Ohmi-Onna or Oumionna) character and mask are that of a passionate woman. Her eyes are narrowed and her teeth are slightly visible in her smile. The mask has something coquettish youthful quality, which cannot be seen in other masks. The Omi-Onna mask is befitting of a woman madly in love. What is also interesting about this mask is the blackened teeth which centuries ago, was customary and the fashion for Japanese women to paint their teeth black.
