The album reached #2 on the US Billboard 200 behind his earlier release, 'You Don't Mess Around with Jim', at the top spot. It features the ballad 'I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song', which reached #9 on the US singles chart. The title track 'I Got A Name' was also a Top-10 hit. In July of 1974, 'Workin' at the Car Wash Blues' became Croce's final Top-40 single, reaching #32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
