'Flag' is the ninth studio album by American singer-songwriter James Taylor, originally released on May 1, 1979. The album included songs ('Millworker' & 'Brother Trucker') from Taylor's music score to Stephen Schwartz's Broadway musical, 'Working,' based on the book by Studs Terkel.
The album reached #10 on the US Billboard 200 and provides a Top-40 single (#28) in Taylor's cover version of the Gerry Goffin–Carole King composition 'Up on the Roof' (a #4 R&B hit in 1963 for 'The Drifters').
James Taylor had played guitar on Carole King's 1970 version of 'Up on the Roof' in her solo recording debut album 'Writer.' They also performed it as a duet during her Carnegie Hall concert in June 1971.
The maritime communications signal "flag" that makes up the cover of the album is a modified form of "O (Oscar)" in the International Code of Signals standing for man overboard.
On the May 12, 1979, episode of Saturday Night Live, Taylor was the musical guest and performed three songs from the album, including 'Up on the Roof.'
