The album was released after the suicide of Browne's first wife, Phyllis Major, and the album's highest charting single 'Here Come Those Tears Again' (co-written by Major's mother Nancy Farnsworth) is dedicated to her. The album made it into the Top-5 on the US Billboard 200. The lead single 'Here Come Those Tears Again' reached #23 and the title track, 'The Pretender', peaked at #58. 'The Pretender' was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1978 and has been included on several editions of Rolling Stone magazine's list of The "500 Greatest Albums of All Time."
