It forms deep in the Earth’s mantle and is brought to the surface by volcanic activity. Rarely, peridot has even been found in meteorites, making it one of the few gemstones that can be extraterrestrial in origin.
Origins: One of the earliest sources of peridot was Zabargad Island (St. John’s Island) in the Red Sea. The Egyptians called it the “gem of the sun” and believed it protected against evil spirits. Some scholars believe that many of the emeralds Cleopatra was said to own may have actually been peridots.
The Romans admired its radiant green glow, which they called “evening emerald” because it didn't darken in lamplight.
It is the birthstone of August. The earliest reference to the concept of birthstones come from the Book of Exodus (Old Testament). It describes a breastplate worn by Aaron, the High Priest of the Israelites, which had 12 stones representing the 12 tribes of Israel. These stones were later associated with the 12 months of the year and the 12 zodiac signs.
In ancient times, especially in India and Babylon, gemstones were believed to have mystical powers and associations with the planets and zodiac signs. People would wear different stones throughout the year based on which gem's planetary power was thought to be strongest that month.
