Backus was a world famous landscape artist and mentor to the Florida Highwaymen artists, a group of 26 African Americans that made a living in the 1960's through the 1990's painting and selling their work roadside and to local businesses in the Indian River and St. Lucie Counties. There are less than 6 Highwaymen living today and even less that are still painting.
