How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse by Cressida Cowell (1st Edition/First Printing) 2007 Hardcover
How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse is the fourth book in Cressida Cowell’s How to Train Your Dragon series, first published in the UK on November 2, 2006 and in the US on April 1, 2007 (Little, Brown and Company). The first edition features the original illustrations and text as released.
The story follows Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III as he races to save his best friend Fishlegs, who has been bitten by a Venomous Vorpent and is dying from Vorpentitis. The only cure is the mythical Vegetable-That-No-One-Dares-Name, rumored to be on the frozen island of Hysteria, home to the eccentric and dangerous Hysteric Tribe led by Norbert the Nutjob—whom Hiccup accidentally shot in the backside during a prior encounter.
Defying his father Stoick’s orders, Hiccup embarks on a perilous winter quest with his dragon Toothless and the fearless warrior girl Camicazi. They infiltrate Hysteria, steal the legendary vegetable (revealed to be a potato), and awaken the island’s true curse: a massive sea dragon called the Doomfang. As the Doomfang breaks free and devours the potato, it lifts the tribe’s isolation—proving the potato’s hidden prophecy.
Returning to Berk, Hiccup believes he’s failed—only to discover that he is the one infected, not Fishlegs. In a final twist, Fishlegs cures Hiccup using the potato-soaked arrow from Hysteria, reinforcing the book’s themes of friendship, courage, and defying fate.
