Hopi Sifting Basket (Tutsaya) - 9" Diameter

Hopi Sifting or Winnowing Basket (Tutsaya) - 9" diameter x approximately 2" deep. Photo #5 shows the outside or bottom of the basket. This style of basket has traditionally been used to sift agricultural products. It is also used socially and ceremonially. They are the oldest type of utilitarian basket made in the pueblo culture. These baskets are woven using Narrow Leaf Yucca leaves which are natural color or dyed to make designs. These baskets are the only style made on all three Hopi mesas.
