Heritage Antique Rarotonga Shell Lei

An exquisite piece from the past, this shell lei is stunning with colors ranging from ombré browns, caramel to chocolate, to the creamiest golden, to white. It’s graceful, but the spotted cone shells give it an unexpected geometric edge. With a main trio of shell types holding court, there’s one larger holding place. Wear it hanging at the bottom like a pendant, or bring it up in an asymmetric look to sit on your clavicle. Overall it’s just a gorgeous example of the art form, and for a piece so old, unexpectedly modern. Antique, strung on kangaroo sinew by Niue women. Rarotonga Tahitian li. Very rare. In excellent vintage condition with some expected patina, including minor shell damage, but overall it’s survived the years well. Age guess is difficult, but I’d say this is pre 1920’s, at the least.
