Heraldic Bronze Perfume Funnel, Marzocco Lion Florence Italy

This bronze perfume funnel features an heraldic lion on the basin and another in the fabulous openwork handle. The heraldic lion with his paw resting on a fleur de lis—also known as the Marzocco lion—is the historic symbol of the free Republic of Florence. As the legend goes, the Florentine Republic chose the symbol of the lion over other animals because lions are able to tear apart the eagle, which was the symbol of imperial power. Apprentices to the Coppini smithy in Florence would hone their skills by making perfume funnels. Each funnel was small, requiring few material resources, but rich in the skills required of a silversmith. In the end, their work was inspected by a master. Unacceptable pieces went back into the crucible and the apprentice tried again. Over time, perfume funnels became a signature of the Coppini family of craftsman. As with most Coppini perfume funnels, this heraldic bronze perfume funnel is wider at the top than the perfume funnels from England and Mexico. I’ve found that leads to fewer splashes or spills. This golden bronze basin sits above a pale bronze (lower copper content) stem. The whole piece measures approximately 45 mm from the tip of the stem to the rim of the basin.
