The Alutiq bentwood hats are made of spruce wood with decorations of bands, rosettes, volutes, dots. and leaves painted in black, white, red, brown, and green; has sea lion whiskers, feathers, ivory; the wood was first chiseled thin, softened by steaming and soaking in hot water, and bent so that the two ends could be sewn together at the back. The hats were worn by men of status and could cost up to 3 slaves.
Jacob Simeonoff of Kodiak Island has
resurrected the art of bentwood hats.
Helen Jane Simeonoff is Koniag (Alutiiq) bom in Kodiak, Alaska to Alutüq-Russian parents.
Her father was William Simeonoff, Jr. who was bor in Kodiak; her mother: Alexandra Knagin was born in Afognak, Alaska. Helen studied art in San Diego, California and watercolor at the University of Alaska-Adak. Helen paints a variety of subject matter including Alaskan natives, Alaskan historical masks, Russian Orthodox Churches of Alaska, icons, animals with wolves being one of her favorite subjects.
Helen's watercolors are often bright, colorful, cheerful and playful. The watercolor reproductions are in standard 11"x14" mats, opening size of 8"x10". The mats fit any standard size 11"x14" frame.
