This hardcover edition details Harry's third year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The story begins with Harry's usual miserable summer at the Dursleys, which culminates in him accidentally inflating his Aunt Marge. He then flees and learns that a dangerous mass murderer named Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban, the wizard prison, and is believed to be after him. New characters are introduced, including Professor Remus Lupin, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, who teaches Harry how to defend himself against Dementors using the Patronus Charm. Another new professor, Sybill Trelawney, the Divination teacher, makes a prophecy that seems to confirm Black's intentions. The book explores themes of justice, prejudice, and the power of love and friendship, as Harry learns the truth about his family and the complex relationships that shaped his past.
