The original.......Black Betty Boop" commonly refers to the historical connection between the animated character Betty Boop and Esther Jones (Baby Esther), a Black child star from the 1920s jazz era, as well as distinct subculture artwork and merchandise. The Real Inspiration: Esther Jones Baby Esther's Act: Esther Jones was a popular African-American singer and performer at the Cotton Club in Harlem known for her signature child-like scat style and "boop-oop-a-doop" vocalizations. The 1932 Lawsuit: When singer Helen Kane sued Fleischer Studios claiming they stole her persona to create Betty Boop, the studio proved in court that Kane had actually copied her "boop" style directly from seeing Baby Esther perform live in 1928.
