The huipil is a hand-woven garment worn by descendants of the ancient Maya. It is an expression of ethnic identity and represents indigenous solidarity and defiance amid oppression. These stunning handcrafted garments represent a rich pre-colonial legacy of craftsmanship, visual history, symbology and storybuilding. A huipil consists of two lengths of hand-woven fabric, stitched together to form a square blouse. A design is woven onto the portions of the cloth that are visible when the huipil is worn.
