For your consideration, a one of a kind hand-made chunky, thick silver-plate over copper, punch stamped 8 " bangle bracelet. Produced in the 1940s or 50s, this classic bracelet still fits in with today's fashion!
The silver plating process used in this piece is the earliest invented. It uses a heating/compression method called Sheffield Plate from the mid-1740s. Copper was over-laid with silver and the two layers were then heat fused and rolled to a thin sheet. The first items to be made with Sheffield Plate were buttons.
Later, details were applied by a technique call flat-chasing in which a hammer and punch was used to work a design into the metal without removing any silver.
In spite of its name, Sheffield Plate was not limited to Sheffield, Great Britain; it was also produced in great volume in the rest of the UK and Europe.
