Unsure of original origin.
It depicts a red shield (gules) with two gold lions (or).
The lions are passant guardant, meaning they are walking with their heads turned to face the viewer.
The design is based on the arms attributed to William the Conqueror and is related to the 12th-century coat of arms of the House of Anjou.
This symbol is used in both Upper and Lower Normandy
