Designer info: While a student at University of California, Diane Freis created and sold elaborately beaded jackets to Hollywood boutiques where they became popular with celebrities such as John Lennon and Diana Ross. Freis used eye-catching prints including florals, geometrics, stripes, and plaids. Each design was produced in limited editions with no more than 10 of any one design distributed around the world. The demand for her dresses became an international fashion phenomenon in the 1980s, and the label was widely stocked in high-end stores such as Harrods and Neiman Marcus.
