Hand Carved Tagua Nut Bird Sculpture

This small vintage sculpture depicts 2 adult birds watching over a nest with 2 baby birds. Hand carved from Tagua Nuts, which are from Central and South America . This piece is by a member of the Wounaan Tribe in Panama. Tagua nuts are extremely hard and durable and difficult to carve. This artwork is prized for its intricacy and precision. It is likened to Japanese Netsuke. But it is not made of animal ivory. It is from the nut, or seed, of a tree. This piece measures approximately 4" wide and 2.25" tall.
